Ever since the critics began to emerge, we have always experienced cases of a certain dissonance between what the public believed and what the specialised publications were proposing. It is a maxim that, even today and even in media such as video games, is still present. With this in mind, we have set up an experiment. What differences would we find between the best PC games according to the critics and the users?

 We went to Metacritic and selected the best PC games of all time according to each side, a total of 42 video game masterpieces that, surprisingly, only rarely go together. Whether or not these votes are unanimous, what is undeniable is that we could not take away any part of the reasoning of any of the parties, they are about thirty games that do or do not have to be tested before dying.

Born at the beginning of 2000, Metacritic has become one of the key pages to find opinions about music, movies, books and video games. For a few years now, getting to know the Metascore of a game, the average score that appears on the site, has become a fairly common action before buying a product.

Despite the fact that Metascore only focuses on the averages made with the scores of the critics, voices like those of the famous briefcases to buy notes, or the fact that in that average the weight of some portals is greater than others, invite to approach a second reading. To ensure a balance, in addition to collecting these specialized press releases, there is also a section where players can vote and review the game. In this way, the scores of critics and users are separated, which, as you will see below, can give very different results, although no less valid.

1. ‘Half-Life 2’

Becoming the second game that has managed to sell more physical copies, only behind a phenomenon like 'Wii Sports' (and without taking into account that adding the digital copies the figure can be widely exceeded), 'GTA V' has become a mass phenomenon that after five years still continues to top the sales lists. Luckily, of course, it's not there - it's one of the most attractive and fun-loving open worlds ever created.

3. ‘The Orange Box’

With 'The Oragne Box' Valve cheated, and not only delivered all the chapters of 'Half-Life 2' and the multiplayer of 'Team Fortress 2' to console users, also included in the package a genius as 'Portal', probably the best puzzle game that has seen the world of video games in the last 20 years.

4. ‘Half-Life’

Launched in 1998, 'Half-Life' was Valve's debut feature, a game that allowed them to live off the proceeds of their success and their graphic engine to shape the empire that Steam has finally become. Without a doubt, one of the best games in history, it is also a classic that, despite its graphics, has stood the test of time very well, which makes it just as recommendable today.

5. ‘BioShock’

History, graphics, gameplay... 'BioShock' has everything you could ask from an FPS, but it also managed to take the storytelling in an action adventure one step further. A journey into the depths to discover an underwater city where a utopia has become an absolute hell that has escaped the control of its creators.

6. ‘Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn’

9. ‘Mass Effect 2’

After accelerating the pace of the first one and going deeper into everything that 'Mass Effect' managed to present, 'Mass Effect 2' became one of the star games of BioWare and one of the most awarded titles on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. A game as big as it is fun, that neither the third installment nor the recent 'Mass Effect Andromeda' managed to surpass.

10. ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City’

A wonderful and tremendously original story in which everything is taken care of with the greatest of care. A classic that, if you consider yourself a fan of the genre, sooner or later you will have to try it out.

16. ‘Diablo’

More than 20 years have passed since Blizzard delivered one of the best RPG action games ever to us. A game that with the loot for flag and the replayability as an excuse, had us hooked for months looking to destroy the worst evil that has plagued the earth, 'Devil'.
