Ever since the critics began to emerge, we have always experienced cases of a certain dissonance between what the public believed and what the specialised publications were proposing. It is a maxim that, even today and even in media such as video games, is still present. With this in mind, we have set up an experiment. What differences would we find between the best PC games according to the critics and the users?
We went to Metacritic and selected the best PC games of all time according to each side, a total of 42 video game masterpieces that, surprisingly, only rarely go together. Whether or not these votes are unanimous, what is undeniable is that we could not take away any part of the reasoning of any of the parties, they are about thirty games that do or do not have to be tested before dying.

Metacritic scoring parameters
Born at the beginning of 2000, Metacritic has become one of the key pages to find opinions about music, movies, books and video games. For a few years now, getting to know the Metascore of a game, the average score that appears on the site, has become a fairly common action before buying a product.
The best video games 2020 so far and the most expected
Despite the fact that Metascore only focuses on the averages made with the scores of the critics, voices like those of the famous briefcases to buy notes, or the fact that in that average the weight of some portals is greater than others, invite to approach a second reading. To ensure a balance, in addition to collecting these specialized press releases, there is also a section where players can vote and review the game. In this way, the scores of critics and users are separated, which, as you will see below, can give very different results, although no less valid.
The best PC games according to the critics
1. ‘Half-Life 2’
- Price: 9,99 euros
- After becoming the first to be named "best PC game ever", 'Half-Life 2' had the difficult task of keeping the bar just as high. This position on the list shows how well it succeeded, becoming one of the titles that would set the industry on its way for years to come in terms of graphics, physics, artificial intelligence and, above all, storytelling. .
2. ‘Grand Theft Auto V’
- Precio: 34,90 euros
Becoming the second game that has managed to sell more physical copies, only behind a phenomenon like 'Wii Sports' (and without taking into account that adding the digital copies the figure can be widely exceeded), 'GTA V' has become a mass phenomenon that after five years still continues to top the sales lists. Luckily, of course, it's not there - it's one of the most attractive and fun-loving open worlds ever created.
3. ‘The Orange Box’
- Price: 18,99 euros
With 'The Oragne Box' Valve cheated, and not only delivered all the chapters of 'Half-Life 2' and the multiplayer of 'Team Fortress 2' to console users, also included in the package a genius as 'Portal', probably the best puzzle game that has seen the world of video games in the last 20 years.
4. ‘Half-Life’
- Price 9,99 euros
Launched in 1998, 'Half-Life' was Valve's debut feature, a game that allowed them to live off the proceeds of their success and their graphic engine to shape the empire that Steam has finally become. Without a doubt, one of the best games in history, it is also a classic that, despite its graphics, has stood the test of time very well, which makes it just as recommendable today.
5. ‘BioShock’
- Price: 19,99 euros
History, graphics, gameplay... 'BioShock' has everything you could ask from an FPS, but it also managed to take the storytelling in an action adventure one step further. A journey into the depths to discover an underwater city where a utopia has become an absolute hell that has escaped the control of its creators.
6. ‘Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn’
- Price: 19,99 euros
7. ‘Portal 2’
- Price: 19,99 euros

A magnificent role-playing game in which it is impossible not to get completely caught up in over 60 hours.
8. ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’
- Price: 39,99 euros
Turned into a meme because of its ability to jump from platform to platform almost without messing up (among many other curiosities of his adventure), 'The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim' is another one of those role-playing games that catch you from the first minute. A mix of RPG and open world where following the story is only part of the fun, and the opportunity to create your own is its best asset.
9. ‘Mass Effect 2’
- Price: 25,97 euros
After accelerating the pace of the first one and going deeper into everything that 'Mass Effect' managed to present, 'Mass Effect 2' became one of the star games of BioWare and one of the most awarded titles on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. A game as big as it is fun, that neither the third installment nor the recent 'Mass Effect Andromeda' managed to surpass.
10. ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City’
- Price: 9,99 euros
Considered by many as the best installment of the saga 'Grand Theft Auto', the truth is that 'Vice City' had a special halo. Not only did it manage to be even more brown than 'GTA III', it also managed to refer to some of the most mythical films of the 80s, thus delivering the definitive history of mafiosos.
11. ‘Civilization II’
The addition of new troops and a more effective and realistic combat system that abandoned the calculations of probability, made 'Civilization II' the definitive game of Sid Meier. A title of strategy, in which you take control of a tribe and take it to the top of the social evolutionary ladder, from which it was impossible to disengage.
12. ‘Quake’
- Price: 4,99 euros
After the success of games like 'Doom' or 'Wolfenstein', 'Quake' became the father of modern FPS by transferring that gameplay to a 3D environment. A magnificent game with an unsurpassable atmosphere that, despite the passage of time, is still able to bring a smile to anyone who takes the controls.
13. ‘BioShock Infinite’
- Precio: 7,49 euros
After the setback of a second release that failed to maintain the level of the first 'BioShock', 'BioShock Infinite' became famous as one of those developments where the creative department seemed to run more than the technology could deliver. Much of what he proposed was lost along the way, but he still managed to deliver a memorable close to the saga that is impossible not to applaud.
14. ‘The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion’
- Precio: 14,99 euros
Before 'Skyrim' was on everyone's lips, and with 'Morrowind' fans clamouring for the sky to be one point below, 'The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion' managed to gain the attention of locals and strangers alike with a fantastic story and equally commendable gameplay. A game ahead of its time that, nevertheless, did not manage to surprise anyone visually or technically.
15. ‘Grim Fandango’
- Precio: 14,99 euros
Considered to be one of the best graphic adventures in history, it's no wonder that 'Grim Fandango' ends up among the best PC games according to the critics. A wonderful and tremendously original story in which everything is taken care of with the greatest of care. A classic that, if you consider yourself a fan of the genre, sooner or later you will have to try it out.
16. ‘Diablo’
- Precio: 8,89 euros
More than 20 years have passed since Blizzard delivered one of the best RPG action games ever to us. A game that with the loot for flag and the replayability as an excuse, had us hooked for months looking to destroy the worst evil that has plagued the earth, 'Devil'.
17. ‘Civilization IV’
- Precio: 59,99 euros
18. ‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’
- Precio: 29,99 euros
Good old Geralt de Rivia got The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to turn the saga from a nice idea into a must-have franchise. Although the first two titles were already in the game category, what the CD team Projekt RED achieved here put them in the orbit of giants like Rockstar.
19. ‘Company of Heroes’
- Precio: 12,99 euros
Relic signed in 'Company of Heroes' one of those games that is inevitable to keep in the memory. A strategy title that even today remains one of the best RTS of all time. If you're in the mood for World War II, both the original and its expansions are games you have to go through sooner or later.
20. ‘Divinity: Original Sin II’
- Precio: 41,99 euros
After being financed in less than 12 hours, 'Divinity: Original Sin II' not only managed to keep alive a saga that was very much loved by users, but also to set a new standard in the action movie genre. 21. ‘Unreal Tournament 2004’
- Precio: 14,99 euros

De no ser por éxitos como este, tal vez Epic Games no sería lo que es hoy en día.
